Phineas M. Compton

Grantsville This Compton family came from France and settled in New Jersey near New Brunswick. His father Robert and mother Lydia Brown Crompton, settled in Berlin in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, in 1813. Phineas was born in 1804 and was a tinnier and gunsmith. He married Adeling Glotfelty and lived in Elk Lick Township. They had a son Samuel who was born in 1827. At the age of 13, Samuel entered his father’s shop and learned the trades of gunsmith and tinnier. Phineas purchased 900 acres across the Mason-Dixon Line where his father had moved. Samuel later became a partner with his father but did not move to the Maryland farm but kept his residence in Salisbury, Pennsylvania. Phineas died in 1858.
